Why all writers need to learn how to use DropBox

For a list of other useful apps for writers, please check out my list of Useful iPad Apps For Writers.

DROPBOX

Price: FREE

Last updated: July 26, 2010 (Version 1.2.5)

Seller: Dropbox, Inc.

Dropbox is a file hosting service that syncs your files online and across your computers. I found out about it from my author friend, Cheryl Rainfield, who uses it to keep copies of her manuscripts in progress.

More and more iPad apps are starting to use Dropbox for file syncing, which is super-handy. This means that I can create a file in one app, grab it from another app, and edit it in yet another app. Then I can pick up the finished version from my desktop computer. I'm also using Dropbox as a convenient online backup for some of my files. I've shared some Dropbox folders with business contacts, like my agent.

The basic version of Dropbox is FREE and lets you have 2 GB of space. Because I work with a lot of image files and sometimes sound files, I've upgraded to a Pro 50 account, which costs $9.99/month but gives me 50 GB of space. You can upgrade to 100 GB space for $19.99/month.

Hey, and if you use this link to sign up for Dropbox, we both get 250 MB extra space. :-)

You can find out more about the various features of Dropbox here.

Hi!!

Just saw you in that "iPad Productivity" article - neat!
For a "similar but different" App that I LOVE, try Evernote - it's like DropBox, but also has a bunch of nice note-taking features, and lets you archive things from all over the web.

Love your blog, now I'm hooked!
:)

Tony, thanks so much! I already use Evernote and LOVE it. But thanks so much for reminding me I need to add it to my online list of useful apps for writers.
