Writers: take this health challenge & increase your productivity

I find that whenever I start slacking off the daily exercise ("I have too much WORK to do..."), I inevitably start feeling more and more tired and uninspired. I'm trying to get in the habit of doing a power walk a day -- by "power walk," I mean a walk that is brisk enough to get me slightly out of breath and sweaty (though the latter's not hard to do in the recent Toronto heat wave, ugh). I used to run, but some knee problems scared me into a lower impact exercise.

Some days, though, I get so wrapped up in my work that it's hard to drag myself away from the computer screen. I've briefly thought about doing my walk in the morning, but I'm currently trying to WRITE first thing in the morning.

Anyway, I'm going to take Ami Spencer's June Fit 'n' Healthy Challenge For Writers, to get 30 minutes of moderate exercise 5 or more days a week.

I find that getting some exercise outdoors does wonders for getting creative inspiration flowing plus is good for de-stressing.

Anyone else want to take the challenge with me?

I'm totally in on this! I used to play roller derby but had to retire last year. I've struggled since then with making myself exercise. I've signed up for a dance class and I'm trying to get creative with things that make me exercise and are still fun. I found a beautiful park I never knew existed and I'm thinking I want to try walking there. If nothing else, and believe me Texas heat is already inching into the 100's, there's the Wii.

Heard about this on Twitter. 5 days a week, huh? Boy, that would melt some fat from the hips.... hopefully. I'm in... hopefully!

I have on my calendar an hour niched out for daily exercise. On my drudge days I'll walk, stretch, maybe run an OMM (Old Man Mile, I'm 39). On my hot days I'll wedge in everything I can.

I go to the gym regardless of how I feel. Sometimes changing into gym clothes is enough for me to get motivated. The weeks I get to the gym five times, I call those my "perfect" weeks.

I'm with you on missing workouts, though. I get grumpy.

Hi Debbie,
I am going through this now as well - too much time at the computer makes for headaches and sore back!
I'm off to the gym as part of a 12 week challenge to get back on track. Thanks, Joanna

I'll take the challenge with you. I have been losing weight steadily on Weight Watchers and have been fitting in exercise when I can. I need to be more consistent with the exercise though. This will be a great opportunity to develop a regular exercise routine.

I signed up for Jonathan Roche's NoExcuseWorkouts, so I've been getting at least six minutes of excercise plus 10 minutes of stretching and adding in a lot of random acts of fitness, ie, taking the stairs and parking across the lot and dancing while I fold clothes or do the dishes. I've lost more inches than pounds and I've gained so much energy, and energy = creativity.

Definitely in! I may have a writing challenge this month, but I think one more challenge won't hurt.

I've been tweeting about it a little! I take a belly dancing class twice a week now (omg, I'm just now getting confident enough to SAY that) and the workout from that is amazing. I find myself practicing the dances randomly. Other than that I'm guilty of just using my Wii. The Texas heat is already over 100F - you break into a full body sweat going from your front door to your car. Sorry, I'd rather do an hour on my Wii than be miserable in that heat!
